Problem: All chickens have external parasites. Without treatment these parasites can grow out of hand and greatly harm the health of the birds. Backyard chickens can have larger problems than even farm grown chickens due to improper aeration, humidity, and treatment. When allowed to ‘free range’, chickens will seek out dry sections of loose dirt and cover their feathers in the dust in order to dry out their natural oils as a way to minimize their parasite problems. This can help regulate their parasites on their own when the conditions are good, but when it rains constantly or the soil is not ideal, this can be impossible. This is particularly bad with many backyard chicken coops that don’t offer large areas, dirt access, dry areas, etc…
