It’s common knowledge that certain essential oils can kill insects, repel insects, or do both.  However, other companies rely on flawed information and copy each other to decide what oils to pick for their formulas.  We don’t. Our formulas are based on over 20 years of research into not only the essential oils themselves but the ingredients that make up each species of oil.  

Most people do not know that essential oils are a complex blend of Esters, Ketones, Phenols, Terpenes, Aldehydes and Alkanes. Pesticide Technology research is the only company to tear apart hundreds of essential oils in search of the single ingredient(s) that account for their individualized killing power and repelling power.  Turns out, in nearly all cases there is only 1 ingredient out of the dozens that make up each essential oil species, that provides the bulk of it’s pest killing or repelling properties.   

Essential oils are far more complicated when you realize that each source has a different level of each of these key ingredients.  This is impacted by the region of the world it was grown in, the type of growing season conditions, and the processing methods used to extract the essential oil from the plants.  The endless combination of variables means that every source is different every time it is purchased because it always has a different “compound signature”.  Armed with the knowledge of what drives each essential oil, Pesticide Technology makes sure that we purchase only the oils that provide the most ideal ‘compound signature’ for it’s intended purpose.   If we are looking to repel a certain species, we may be looking for a different compound signature for that oil than we may need from the same species if we want to kill a different species.
